Your metal detecting experience will start with a welcome at Sheriff Hutton Castle in the village of Sheriff Hutton, with breakfast, tea and coffee. You will be introduced to the team and provided with all the equipment you need for a fantastic day of detecting: a detector, pinpointer, spade, trowel, finds bag and box - and we will head to the nearby fields. Groups will be limited to 16 people. We will show you how to use your detector, how to "sweep" correctly, the correct way to dig a 'plug' of soil and replace it so leaving the land as you found it. You will have the chance to use your detector over a variety of objects (including gold!) to give you some idea of what your detector is "telling you". We have also set up a special area on the field where you can practice your new skills - where we know there are finds to discover. All the time we will be there to offer advice and help. And then it is your chance to stride off across the fields in search of treasure, history - and maybe a ring pull or rusty nail! After a morning's detecting you will have lunch back at the castle and compare finds with your fellow detectorists. After lunch you can head back out onto the fields. During the whole day, the team will be on site to identify finds and catalogue anything of interest. We will wrap up detecting around 5pm and head back to the castle, where, in the majestic medieval hall in one of the castle's towers, the Find of the Day award will be presented and people will be given the chance to ask any questions about the hobby: advice on equipment, how to get permissions, joining clubs etc. The day will finish around 6pm.
