The answer is you could find almost anything! The land you will be detecting on has been worked on and used for thousands of years. From the Bronze Age, through to the Romans, Vikings, Anglo Saxons and into the medieval, post-medieval and Victorian time, the scope for what objects may lie beneath is vast. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean you will find a gold hoard or Richard III's crown during your day with us. But you never know! That's the thrill of metal detecting.
Here is a list of the more common items found by detectorists:
Coins (Roman, medieval hammered silver, Georgian and Victorian)
Buckles
Buttons
Jewellery
Musket Balls (from the English Civil War)
AND (let us be honest about this)
Nails, Horseshoes, Blobs of lead, Unidentifiable bits of metal, Ring Pulls, Shotgun Caps etc etc.
Yes, there is a lot of rubbish under your feet and as detectorists and you will dig it up. Even the most sophisticated metal detectors struggle to tell the difference between a silver coin and ring pull. That is why the detectorist's motto is: IF IN DOUBT, DIG IT OUT!
