It is no exaggeration to say that the fields on which you will have your first go at detecting are steeped in history. Discover Detecting has access to thousands of acres of land in and around Sheriff Hutton, both arable and pasture.
Sheriff Hutton is home to not one, but two castles: the ruins of the medieval Sheriff Hutton Castle, built in the 1370s and which can count as its former owners Richard III, Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. An earlier Norman motte and bailey castle, dating from the reign of King Stephen.can also be found in the village. No structural remains are visible of this castle, but the mounds on which it was built are still evident.
The fields have been the location of some lovely finds, including a beautiful gold 'bible', which made the news internationally and is currently going through the treasure process. Other exquisite items have also been found on the land, including a solid gold medieval posy ring and a silver Tudor dress hook, in addition to coins dating from Roman times through to the present day!
